SIMPLE MODEcrushed stone calculator

Crushed Stone Calculator

Estimate crushed stone volumes and tonnage from simple measurements. Enter a pile’s height and base circumference, or a pad’s length, width and depth; results come back in cubic yards, cubic metres, tonnes and short tons at a typical loose density of 1.6 t/m³.

Want exact numbers, not estimates? Tape formulas assume an ideal cone or box — real piles settle, spill and merge. A drone scan (DSM/GeoTIFF from any photogrammetry app) captures the true surface: the PileReport DSM tool computes true per-pile volumes in your browser. Free, nothing uploaded.

Estimate from idealized geometry and typical loose bulk densities. Not a certified survey. Not for trade measurement. Always verify densities with site measurements.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How many tons in a cubic yard of crushed stone?

About 1.2 tonnes — roughly 1.3 short tons — per loose cubic yard at 1.6 t/m³. Denser grades like limestone base course or rail ballast run heavier: switch to Custom and enter the supplier’s figure.

How accurate is a tape-based estimate?

Within roughly 10–20% on a clean, separate cone. Merged or irregular piles break the shape assumption badly — for those, scan the yard with a drone and use the exact-volume tool instead.
